Kōrero ō te Tumuaki Week 6 Term 1

Writer: John O'ReganJohn O'Regan

Over the past few weeks I have been really impressed to see the range of physical activities our children take part in, whether organised by the school, through an external club, or more informal family activities.

Of course we had our children taking part in our school swimming events, and tomorrow we wish all the best to those involved in the interschool swimming event at Nayland Park. We have also had local football and hockey clubs running sessions with classes to give a taste of what these sports offer.

Over the weekend we had many of our tamariki take on the challenge of the Weetbix Tryathlon, which is always a really good challenge.

Outside of school I know we have children who do a wide variety of sports, including cheerleading, gymnastics, bmxing, go-carting, athletics and rugby to name just a few.

Sport at this age is not about winning. It is about learning the skills, both physical and mental, to cope in a competitive and cooperative environment.

Team sports such as football, cricket or netball teach us communication skills, tolerance and how to support and encourage each other.

Individual sports might teach us perseverance, discipline and goal setting.

All sports will develop our physical skills, and it is important at primary school that these are kept broad. In fact, research shows that success in sport later in life is determined more on building a broad base of skills rather than specialising too early. And the last thing we want to do is put children off by putting undue pressure on children.

As adults we need to be encouraging, letting them find their own paths and passions. Not every child will want to be a competitive athlete, but all can find joy and fulfilment in physical activity.

Well done to all our players this term. Thank you to the parents who offer to coach, referee and support children to enjoy being physically active.
